Clearwater Beach is located in Pinellas County near St. Petersburg, approximately 20 miles from Tampa International Airport. “White Sand Paradise” has been used to describe the beach, and as its very name suggests, the beach is characterized by crystal clear water and white sand beaches that stretch for 2.5 miles along the Gulf. In addition to Clearwater’s spectacular beach scene, there are many wonderful parks; most along the waterways with nature trails, bird sanctuaries, and picnic areas. There are also several beautiful bridges spanning the city, connecting to the beaches.
Clearwater Beach offers entertainment such as parasailing, jet skiing, dolphin and sunset boat tours, restaurants within walking distance of the beach, and pirate ship cruise tours. Pier 60, the central hub of Clearwater Beach, has a playground for children, a snack bar, fishing pier and is home to one of the most famous nightly events: “Sunsets at Pier 60″ where visitors enjoy live entertainment with street performers doing magic, juggling, musical and dance acts. In addition, on the pier itself, is a nightly arts and crafts display where you can purchase homemade items created by local artisans such as jewelry, candles, and other unique gifts.
Just up the road across a short beach causeway sits the Clearwater Beach Marine Aquarium, one of only eight facilities in the United States authorized to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals. They give you a “hands on” personal experience with bottlenose dolphins, loggerhead sea turtles, Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, river otters, sting rays, local fish and coral reefs. Sick and injured marine mammals get shelter here until they recover and can be returned to their natural homes.
To get around the northern and southern parts of Clearwater Beach, the Jolley Trolley offers transportation to tourists on an hourly basis. Of course, many people choose to walk along the wide sidewalks and take a more leisurely pace while strolling up and down the streets.
In nearby Tampa Bay, you can visit Busch Gardens and experience up-close encounters with amazing animals, take an unforgettable safari across the Serengeti Plains, test your courage on pulse-pounding coasters, or catch live entertainment all year long. Or spend the afternoon at Adventure Island, Tampa’s only outdoor water theme park.
