Visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium might just be the highlight of your trip to Florida. A trip to the aquarium will give you the opportunity to meet a wide variety of sea creatures and learn detailed stories of their rescue and rehabilitation.
Dolphins, sea turtles and otters are among many of the animals that are being rehabilitated at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Every year the aquarium rescues animals that receive immediate treatment and rehabilitation with hopes of returning them back to their natural environment.
If you visit the aquarium you will have the opportunity to meet “Winter”, the famous “tail-less” dolphin. Winter was just two months old when she was found entangled in a crab trap near Cape Canaveral. Rescuers brought her to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Not expected to survive, Winter hung on with the help of round-the-clock care; her damaged tail, however, could not be saved. Left with just a stump, she taught herself to swim by using a side-to-side motion. Doctors worried that Winter’s spine could be damaged and fitted her with a prosthetic tail!
If you visit the Clearwater Aquarium, not only can you visit Winter, but during different times of the year, visitors can pet manta rays, watch dolphin shows, partake in a dolphin encounters, or head out on a Sea Life Safari Eco-tour. Visitors can also tour the food preparation area and feed live sting rays. The aquarium also has a gift shop that benefits the non-profit aquarium and is filled with great souvenirs.
